Berlinsky Gives Back

After winning the Bassmaster College Classic Bracket presented by Lew’s at Watauga Lake, Berlinsky donated his entire $7,500 cash prize to the United Way’s Carter County Emergency Relief Fund for their continued flood relief efforts. “I thought it was the right thing to do. A lot of people have been displaced and still don’t have their houses back. I couldn’t imagine that,” Berlinsky said. “I think it will go to a really good cause.” After the tournament standings were made official, Berlinsky returned to the Bassmaster weigh-in stage and gave a tearful Mayor Patty Woodby the check. “I want this money to go back into the community and help everyone here,” he said. BFHOF Inducts Three New Members

The Bass Fishing Hall of Fame celebrated its 25th anniversary with the induction of Randy Hopper, Craig Lamb, and William Shakespeare Jr., bringing its total membership to 103. The ceremony, held Sept. 25 at the White River Conference Center, raised nearly $200,000 through sponsorships, auctions, and donations to support conservation grants, scholarships, and enhancements to the Hall’s exhibit at Johnny Morris’ Wonders of Wildlife National Museum. PRADCO also contributed $22,500 from sales of commemorative lures. The night honored the impact of industry pioneers—Hopper for innovations at Ranger Boats, Lamb for his decades shaping tournament media and operations, and Shakespeare Jr. for tackle inventions that revolutionized fishing. Surrounded by legends, rising anglers, and industry leaders, the event highlighted the past, present, and future of the sport.

Wheeler Partners With Suzuki Marine

Suzuki Marine has officially added one of the biggest names in professional bass fishing to its roster — Jacob Wheeler. Widely regarded as one of the most dominant anglers in the sport today, Wheeler brings his winning edge and relentless drive to the Suzuki family. “Legends run with Suzuki,” the company announced, welcoming Wheeler to a powerhouse lineup of pros who trust Suzuki’s performance, reliability, and innovation on the water. SPRO KGB Lil Guy 120 Glide Bait

Designed to produce bites in tough conditions, the SPRO KGB Lil Guy 120 Glide Bait delivers a similar action to the popular KGB Chad Shad 180 in a more compact size for coaxing strikes from reluctant fish. Manufactured by SPRO for KGB Swimbaits, the Lil Guy 120 features a lifelike baitfish profile tricked out with intricate detailing, oversized eyes, a wide brush tail, and a jointed body for enhanced action. Recommended for use on 15- to 20-pound fluorocarbon line, the Lil Guy 120 can be straight reeled or chopped and delivers a surprisingly long gliding action for its small size to draw in predators from a considerable distance. Fully equipped for battle right out of the package, the Lil Guy 120 is armed with a pair of razor-sharp treble hooks affixed to swiveling hook hangers to minimize the chances of a lunker bass coming unbuttoned mid-fight. Weighing just under one ounce, the Lil Guy 120 is easily fished on standard bass tackle, eliminating the need for specialized equipment often required with larger, heavier glide baits. If you’re ready for savage strikes from largemouth, striped bass, and other species, tie on a SPRO KGB Lil Guy 120 Glide Bait and get ready for some very big action.

Jordon Joins Black Bass Symposium

At the 3rd Black Bass Symposium in San Antonio, TX Major League Fishing pro angler Kelly Jordon joined leading resource managers, researchers, and conservationists as a guest speaker, offering an angler’s perspective on the future of the fishery. The symposium builds on a rich history, with the first event in 1975 uniting scientists and anglers to discuss the needs of bass fisheries, and the second in 2000 focusing on the ecology, conservation, and management of black bass species. Co-hosted by the American Fisheries Society (AFS) and the Fisheries Conservation Foundation (FCF), this year’s event celebrated those past achievements while also addressing new challenges. Jordon’s insights as both a Major League Fishing co-founder and longtime competitor complemented the scientific discussions, underscoring how innovation, conservation, and collaboration remain essential to advancing black bass management for the next generation.

Kelly’s Gamble Pays Off With Yamaha Power Pay

In the trenches of tournament bass fishing, where the water’s murky and the stakes are high, guys like Grant Kelly don’t just chase fish — they chase a life that’s raw, real and unfiltered. Kelly, a hard-charging angler and entrepreneur, ditched a steady gig in mechanical engineering to dive headfirst into salvaging old boat parts. It’s a move that smells like gasoline and freedom — and it’s all wrapped up in his unbreakable bond with Yamaha outboards. But the real kicker? Yamaha’s Power Pay contingency program: It offers a sweet payout for running their motors and finishing strong. It’s turned Kelly’s hustle into cold, hard cash, proving that betting on reliability can beat playing it safe. Learn more about Kelly’s story and Yamaha Power Pay here.

The Magic Of Local Tournaments

The big bass, big stage, and big dreams of Bassmaster and other national tournament trails provide a pathway for anyone with ambition to compete at the highest levels of tournament fishing. That’s the pinnacle of bass fishing, but the culture of bass fishing tournaments is perhaps best represented at a weeknight jackpot with a few dozen anglers talking fishing in a half empty boat ramp parking lot, eager for a couple hours on the water after work. Depending on what part of the country you live they may be called fruit jars, wildcats, week-nighters, jackpots, derbies, or opens, but regardless of the region this community of anglers looks and feels about the same.  BassmastHER ambassador Maggie Jo Carsello will be the first to tell you, there is something special about weeknight derbies and local tournaments. MLF Announces BPT Payout Structure Enhancements For 2026

Major League Fishing, the world’s largest tournament-fishing organization, announced today significant enhancements to the payout structure of the Bass Pro Tour for the 2026 season. The adjustments, driven by angler feedback, mark another step in establishing the Bass Pro Tour as the most competitive and rewarding circuit in professional bass fishing. The Bass Pro Tour roster will feature 51 anglers next season, creating the most exclusive and challenging field in the history of the sport. With the most accomplished lineup ever assembled, every cast, every fish and every decision will carry even greater weight. For 2026, MLF is expanding the cut line at each event. Previously, the top 20 anglers advanced from the Qualifying Round to the Knockout Round, with the round winner advancing directly to the Championship Round. Beginning next season, the top 25 anglers will advance from the Qualifying Round – the round winner continuing to advance directly to the Championship Round, while 24 advance to the Knockout Round. The shift means that every angler who reaches the Knockout Round will also finish “in the money.” Another notable change comes at the top and bottom of the payout scale. In 2025, event champions earned $150,000, with the last checks paying $10,000. For 2026, the anglers voted to adjust the distribution: Check out the full details here.

6th Sense Saltwater Shindo Shad

Built using a high-strength plastic for improved durability with aggressive saltwater predators, the 6th Sense Saltwater Shindo Shad is an ideal baitfish imitation for targeting species like snook, redfish, and speckled trout. Made to roll side to side on a steady retrieve, the Shindo’s streamlined profile is equipped with mid-body “wings” and a jointed tail that pivots and flutters independently for tantalizing secondary action. Effectively slow rolled, twitched, jerked, or hopped, the Shindo Shad is perfect for weightless rigging on its own, under a cork, and also pairs nicely on a 1/8–1/4 oz jighead by allowing the bait to fish deeper while maintaining a natural horizontal posture. Highly castable and easy to skip under docks and overhanging mangrove branches where inshore species often lurk, the 6th Sense Saltwater Shindo Shad is also highly effective for forward-facing sonar and general freshwater applications. Team Toyota Weighs in on New FFS Ruling for Bassmaster Elites

The conversation around forward facing live sonar and the technology’s impact on competitive bass fishing has been an omnipresent theme amongst professional anglers, fans, and industry pundits for several years now. You’ve likely heard countless passionate opinions surrounding FFS and, unfortunately, like many differences of opinion in 2025 the dispute around FFS has become highly divisive. The essence of the debate is simple. Most anglers and fans unanimously agree that live sonar is an incredible tool that helps anglers catch more and bigger fish, but should it have a place in the highest levels of bass fishing competition? Check out what some of the anglers from Team Toyota had to add to the conversation here.

And With The Flip Of A Coin

Curious how technology will shape the 2026 Bassmaster Elite Series? Bassmaster just revealed the results of their coin flip show that decided which events will allow forward-facing sonar next season. With a hybrid format blending both tech-enabled and traditional fishing tournaments, anglers will need to prove themselves in more ways than one. Dive in to see which waters will use this new rule and how it could shake up the competition and learn more here.

SPRO Spin John 80 Spybait

Designed by Elite Series angler, John Crews, the Spro Spin John 80 was built to be the ultimate spybait. Unlike any other spybait, the Spro Spin John 80 features a special chin underneath the bait to increase water resistance, as well as, two swivels incorporated into the line tie and the back hook hanger, which causes the bait rock back and forth and generate a heavy body rolling action. The swivels also eliminate leverage and make it harder for fish to throw the hook to dramatically increase your fishing landing ratio. A pair of counter rotating blades produce a subtle flash and pluming vibration, which is key to triggering lethargic fish into biting as well. The Spro Spin John 80 was developed to catch fish in tough conditions, and it also works exceptionally well when the fish are highly pressured or suspended and in a non-aggressive mood. Finished with two Gamakatsu G-Finesse treble hooks that provide unmatched hook penetration even with extremely light line, the Spro Spin John 80 will put fish in the boat when other lures cannot. Team USA Set To Do Battle In South Africa

The 19th annual Black Bass World Championship is taking place September 4–6, 2025, at Lake Arabie in Limpopo province, South Africa, where Team USA is aiming to reclaim the World Championship title. Led by legendary angler and new head coach Kevin VanDam, the U.S. team features six elite anglers—including Jacob Wheeler, Kyle Welcher, Scott Martin, Ott DeFoe, Logan Parks, and Drew Gill—who have been carefully paired to optimize teamwork. The challenging venue, Arabie Dam, is known for its fluctuating water levels, diverse habitats, and five-fish limits exceeding 30 pounds. Team USA enters the tournament with high expectations and a strong belief that their skill, communication, and chemistry give them an edge on the field. The impressive roster boasts an impressive career earning resume of over $12 million dollars between the 6 man roster.

Spending A Day With A Legend

If you’ve fished local tournaments on Clark’s Hill Reservoir in recently, chances are you’ve seen Davis Madden’s name near the top of the leaderboard. An up-and-coming young angler who works for Greenfish Tackle, Davis has built his skills on the Savannah River Chain—fisheries renowned across the Southeast for their blueback herring bite. When the chance came to spend a day on the water with legendary angler Hank Parker, Davis didn’t hesitate.

“This whole opportunity came about through my relationship with Mr. Parker’s camera guy,” Madden explained. “I mentioned in passing that I’d love to fish with him one day, but I never imagined the word would get back to him—let alone that he’d actually accept.” Despite coming from different generations, the two instantly connected through their shared passion for bass fishing. Davis introduced Hank to a few tricks with Forward Facing Sonar, while Hank swapped stories from his storied career and passed along his hard-earned knowledge. Greenfish Tackle owner Jon Hair joined the pair for part of the day, adding to the fun, and even brought Hank by the shop for a tour and a look at their baits. For Davis, it was a day he’ll never forget—a reminder that no matter our age or style of fishing, the love of the sport is what brings anglers together.

Greenfish Tackle Sinewy Jig

An all-purpose jig built to provide versatility for all situations, the Greenfish Tackle Sinewy Jig earns its name with a small and compact profile that’s powerful enough to be fished using heavier line and tackle. Armed with a medium-wire short shank VMC hook for rapid hook penetration, the Sinewy Jig is strong enough hook for close-quarter flipping applications, while not being oversized for open water casting. The recessed line tie seamlessly matches the shape of the jig head to reduce snags and allow the jig to navigate complex cover, while a molded bait keeper locks soft plastic trailers in place over numerous fish catches. Finished with hand-tied skirts for long-lasting performance, the Greenfish Tackle Sinewy Jig is available in a variety of proven silicone skirt colors as well as Greenfish’s best-selling living rubber color patterns. Check out the full selection here.

B.A.S.S. Announces Live Sonar Rule Change For 2026 Elite Series

B.A.S.S., the worldwide authority on bass fishing, announced an update to its forward-facing live sonar (FFS) policy that will take effect during the 2026 Progressive Bassmaster Elite Series season. Beginning in 2026, forward-facing live sonar will only be permitted in up to five of the nine regular-season Elite Series events. Which events allow the technology will be determined randomly. The remaining events will prohibit its use entirely, including during official practice. Restrictions implemented for 2025 — limiting anglers to one live sonar transducer and a maximum of 55 total screen inches — will remain in place. The 2026 Bass Pro Shops Bassmaster Classic presented by Under Armour will allow FFS, since all qualifiers earned their spot under the 2025 rules. This decision follows two years of careful evaluation. In 2025, B.A.S.S. scheduled a diverse set of fisheries to naturally limit FFS dominance, and winners in nearly half of the season’s events relied primarily on traditional tactics. However, live sonar still influenced outcomes across the board. Many stakeholders within the bass fishing community, including fans and B.A.S.S. members, continued to voice concerns about live sonar use and its influence on competition. Elite Series anglers, through the Angler Board of Professionals (ABP), also asked for more limitations for the 2026 season.

Why Your Fishing Gear Costs More In 2025: Tariffs Explained

If you’ve noticed fishing tackle prices creeping up, you’re not alone — and it’s not just ordinary inflation. The bass fishing industry is being squeezed by a combination of tariffs, supply chain pressures, and long-standing taxes that few anglers even know exist. The result? Higher prices at the register, thinner margins for small tackle shops, and new challenges for companies that make the gear we all depend on. Check it out more details about tariffs may affect your upcoming purchases here.

BFHOF Has Awarded Scholarships Under Its Fishery Management Scholarship Program

For the third consecutive year, the Bass Fishing Hall of Fame (BFHOF) has awarded scholarships under its Fishery Management Scholarship Program. This program aims to provide financial support and encouragement to high school and college bass anglers pursuing careers in fields that will directly contribute to healthy fisheries, essential access, and clean rivers, lakes and reservoirs, consistent with the BFHOF’s mission.

The eight selected applicants will each receive $2,500 to pursue their studies. The recipients include:

  • Reagan Davis — Carleton University
  • Cole Hofstadt — Bemidji State University
  • Noah Lieberman — Missouri State University
  • Colby Munrow — Arkansas Tech University
  • Kate Norrid — Auburn University
  • Garrett Page — South Georgia State College
  • Riley Schuldt — University of Wisconsin, Stevens Point
  • Alexa Wasankari — Clemson University

“The response to this program continues to be exceptional,” said incoming BFHOF Board President Bruce Stanton. “We have a dedicated Conservation/Education Committee, led by Board Member and BFHOF inductee Gene Gilliland, and they gave great care in choosing the recipients. Based on the results achieved by previous years’ grantees, and their long-term career goals, we know that our supporters made a difference that aligns perfectly with the Hall’s mission of celebrating, promoting, and preserving bass fishing. Healthy fisheries are a prerequisite for a healthy sport.”

The awardees consist of high school seniors committed to enrolling in a four-year college or university program, as well as undergraduate and graduate students currently enrolled in a four-year college, university, or accredited graduate program with a declared or planned major in biology, aquatic ecology, fisheries, marine science, or a closely related natural resources field.

The Simple Joy Of Fishing: KVD’s Grassroots Gospel

In a world cluttered with gadgets and YouTube tutorials, he’s preaching a back-to-basics truth that fishing’s soul lies in its simplicity, the raw thrill of the bite and the quiet moments that make you forget the world. Check out the full story here.

How I Stay Cool, Dry, and Focused with AFTCO Fishing Apparel: Patrick Walters

In tournament bass fishing, every cast counts. There’s no room for distractions when you’re trying to make the most of every moment on the water. Success often comes down to how well you manage your time, your focus, and your choices from sunrise to weigh-in. I’ve spent my career chasing bass across the country, from cold fronts in upstate New York to sweltering heat down in Okeechobee. If there’s one thing I’ve learned, it’s this: staying comfortable keeps you sharp. When the mental and physical toll of the day kicks in, what you’re wearing matters just as much as what’s tied on your line. That’s why I trust AFTCO fishing apparel to help me stay cool, dry, and dialed in, no matter what the weather throws at me. Learn more about how Patrick Walters stays cool, dry, and focused here.

Private Equity Gutted Surf Brands — Is Fishing Next?

Living in Southern California, I’ve watched passion-driven surf brands like Quiksilver, Volcom, Billabong, Hurley, and RVCA collapse under the weight of private equity deals, complicated licensing agreements, and Chapter 11 filings. Less and less of their product can be found in core surf stores. Instead, it’s often now sold at Costco, JC Penny’s, and off-price channels that have nothing to do with surfing. The powerhouse surf brands I grew up on are losing relevancy at a striking rate. While there are several reasons for that, Private Equity has certainly played a role in their current stage of demise. The recent bankruptcy of Liberated Brands, the discreet parent company formerly behind many of the most well-known surf brands, is just the latest chapter in an all too familiar story. Customer service lines at these brands are far too often silent, blown-out seam taping on wetsuits go unrepaired, and overall product quality has fallen. While new companies have stepped in to pick up the licenses for these brands, much of the damage is already done. What began as aspirations for growth spiraled into a cycle of overexpansion, debt loads, declining purpose, and a lack of authenticity. The surf industry that once defined youth and counterculture became the paper pushers they initially sprung up to rebel against. Thankfully, there is a new wave of surf brands. Not coincidentally, many are founder, independently, or family led. While that should give anyone who loves surfing hope, the lessons for the fishing industry are clear—and hit close to home. Check out the full article from Casey Shedd, President of AFTCO here
