Yamaha Power Pay Rewards Bassmaster College Champions

On top of making college fishing history in more ways than one, Lander University anglers Garrett Smith and Andrew Blanton won the Yamaha Power Pay bonus for the 2025 Strike King^Ò Bassmaster^Ò College National Championship on beautiful Lake Cherokee in the hills of east Tennessee.

The Lander University Bearcats won an additional $5,000 from Yamaha’s popular contingency program for being the highest finishing team with an eligible Yamaha outboard on their boat. Smith and Blanton be came the first two-time National Champions in Bassmaster’s storied college series. They also won the 2024 Championship on Lake Hartwell. MLF Reveals 2026 Toyota Series Schedule

BFHOF Has Awarded Scholarships Under Its Fishery Management Scholarship Program

For the third consecutive year, the Bass Fishing Hall of Fame (BFHOF) has awarded scholarships under its Fishery Management Scholarship Program. This program aims to provide financial support and encouragement to high school and college bass anglers pursuing careers in fields that will directly contribute to healthy fisheries, essential access, and clean rivers, lakes and reservoirs, consistent with the BFHOF’s mission.

The eight selected applicants will each receive $2,500 to pursue their studies. The recipients include:

Reagan Davis — Carleton University
Cole Hofstadt — Bemidji State University
Noah Lieberman — Missouri State University
Colby Munrow — Arkansas Tech University
Kate Norrid — Auburn University
Garrett Page — South Georgia State College
Riley Schuldt — University of Wisconsin, Stevens Point
Alexa Wasankari — Clemson University

“The response to this program continues to be exceptional,” said incoming BFHOF Board President Bruce Stanton. “We have a dedicated Conservation/Education Committee, led by Board Member and BFHOF inductee Gene Gilliland, and they gave great care in choosing the recipients. Based on the results achieved by previous years’ grantees, and their long-term career goals, we know that our supporters made a difference that aligns perfectly with the Hall’s mission of celebrating, promoting, and preserving bass fishing. Healthy fisheries are a prerequisite for a healthy sport.”

The awardees consist of high school seniors committed to enrolling in a four-year college or university program, as well as undergraduate and graduate students currently enrolled in a four-year college, university, or accredited graduate program with a declared or planned major in biology, aquatic ecology, fisheries, marine science, or a closely related natural resources field.

Private Equity Gutted Surf Brands — Is Fishing Next?

Living in Southern California, I’ve watched passion-driven surf brands like Quiksilver, Volcom, Billabong, Hurley, and RVCA collapse under the weight of private equity deals, complicated licensing agreements, and Chapter 11 filings. Less and less of their product can be found in core surf stores. Instead, it’s often now sold at Costco, JC Penny’s, and off-price channels that have nothing to do with surfing. The powerhouse surf brands I grew up on are losing relevancy at a striking rate. While there are several reasons for that, Private Equity has certainly played a role in their current stage of demise. The recent bankruptcy of Liberated Brands, the discreet parent company formerly behind many of the most well-known surf brands, is just the latest chapter in an all too familiar story. Customer service lines at these brands are far too often silent, blown-out seam taping on wetsuits go unrepaired, and overall product quality has fallen. While new companies have stepped in to pick up the licenses for these brands, much of the damage is already done. What began as aspirations for growth spiraled into a cycle of overexpansion, debt loads, declining purpose, and a lack of authenticity. The surf industry that once defined youth and counterculture became the paper pushers they initially sprung up to rebel against. Thankfully, there is a new wave of surf brands. Not coincidentally, many are founder, independently, or family led. While that should give anyone who loves surfing hope, the lessons for the fishing industry are clear—and hit close to home. Carson-Newman Captures Toyota Bonus Bucks at College National Championship

Carson-Newman University anglers James Sumrell and Andrew Turner were one half of the history-making conclusion that resulted in an overtime fish-off to decide the 2025 Strike King Bassmaster College National Championship presented by Bass Pro Shops on Cherokee Lake. Eventual champions Andrew Blanton and Garrett Smith (of Lander University) caught a legal keeper within the first five minutes of overtime. Locking up back-to-back National Championship titles and leaving Sumrell and Turner on the outside looking in. For their efforts Sumrell and Turner also took home the top spot for Toyota Bonus Bucks, for being the highest finishing team towing their boat with a Toyota tow vehicle. They won an additional $3,500 payout from the College Series of Toyota’s popular Bonus Bucks contingency program which rewards collegiate anglers who drive any year Toyota tow vehicle.

Grigsby Announces Retirement From Professional Fishing

Shaw Grigsby, a member of the Bass Fishing Hall of Fame and a professional angler for more than 40 years announces his retirement from professional bass fishing. The Gainesville, Fla. Pro is competing in the final Major League Fishing Tackle Warehouse Invitational event of the 2025 season at the St Lawrence River in Massena, N.Y. this week, his final as a full-time touring professional.

Following the conclusion of that event, Grigsby will return home to Gainesville, Fla. Where he has begun working with Florida Wildlife Officials capturing and rehoming nuisance alligators with his grandson Bryce and spending time with his wife Polly, their children Amy and Shaw and their grandchildren. Grigsby has not ruled out competing in one-off professional events near home. Check out more details on Grigsby’s retirement here.

Rest In Peace Brother

As fans around the world mourn the passing of Hulk Hogan, many are remembering not just his legendary wrestling career, but his unexpected impact on the bass fishing world.

Hogan made a splash in the fishing community through a memorable national ad campaign for Ugly Stik rods. With his signature intensity, he brought larger-than-life energy to the brand, helping promote fishing to a new generation of fans. The campaign—equal parts humor and hype—became an instant classic among anglers. Hogan also made headlines with his involvement in FLW Fantasy Fishing. The immortal Hulk Hogan added star power to the growing sport and drew attention from outside the traditional fishing crowd. Yo-Zuri America Wins 11th Annual ICAST Cup

Representing Yo-Zuri America, the father-son duo of Bobby Bakewell and Robert Bakewell, both of Orlando, weighed in a three bass limit totaling 16 pounds, 3 ounces, to win the 2025 ICAST Cup at Lake Toho Presented by Major League Fishing (MLF) Tuesday. The four-hour bass fishing tournament, hosted by the Kissimmee Sports Commission, was one of the kick-off events to ICAST 2025. In its 11-year history, the charity tournament has raised more than $95,800 to benefit the industry’s angler advocacy program, Keep America Fishing. Tuesday’s field totaled 33 boats, including a handful of MLF Bass Pro Tour, Tackle Warehouse Invitationals and Toyota Series anglers, as well as outdoor media and industry representatives from popular tackle brands and non-profits. The tournament this year raised a total of $6,600 Keep America Fishing. The Yo-Zuri America team won by a 1-pound, 4-ounce margin over Team FishNFX, which was comprised of Michael Muenzner, Paul Shenep and Sheila Crowe. Check out more details here.

Flooded Beaver Dam Helps Ott DeFoe Win Toyota Bonus Bucks

It’s not often you hear about a beaver dam playing a role in a top-level bass fishing tournament win. For five-time Bass Pro Shops Bass Pro Tour champion Ott DeFoe, that’s a big part of the story of his victory at Zenni Stage 6 Presented by Athletic Brewing Company on the Potomac River.

While DeFoe can catch bass with the best of them employing any technique, the east Tennessee native is well-known for his prowess plying shallow waters. He grew up exploring little creeks and backwaters, using his eyes and instincts to find and catch fish. After a decent practice, Ott believed the area he found had potential and knew he was going to be able to fish his strengths in the backwaters of the Potomac. “I was able to fish the way I enjoy… I didn’t have a depth finder turned on, but I don’t think I caught a bass much deeper than 24 inches in four days of competition,” DeFoe said with a smile. Mental Reset Has Been Money For Justin Lucas

To excel in Bass Pro Tour competition, anglers must showcase a wide variety of skills, with nuances specific to the Bass Pro Tour format. You must be proficient with forward-facing sonar to capitalize on the single FFS period, and elite at catching them with traditional methods the other two periods. Pros must take their weights being zeroed into consideration and make their game plans accordingly. There is enough strategy and high pressure decision-making rolled into BPT competition to make a high stakes card-counter blush.

Watching Lucas fish freely through this proverbial gauntlet has been impressive. Lucas has showcased his versatility, catching them shallow and deep, power fishing and finesse, with old-school offshore tactics and new age FFS approaches. According to the Alabama pro, his results this season are a product of mindset more than mechanics. “Man, I am having a lot of fun fishing right now and truly enjoying what I do,” Lucas said. “I had this realization before we started this season that I am halfway through my career. I thought to myself, I can either be a grumpy old guy or I can just have fun and be thankful for being out here. And that’s been my mindset this year. Every day of practice, every day of the tournaments I am just enjoying being on the water.” This mental approach may sound simple, but it’s not always easy to find joy in your day job. This is Lucas’ 15th season as a professional angler and it would be easy for fishing to start to feel like “work” if he let it. As Jeremy Lawyer looks back on his journey to reach the highest level of professional fishing, there’s one thing he’s especially thankful he did, which is holding on to a few things along the way. Costa Bass Derby

Mark your calendars, the Costa Bass Derby, a bass fishing team tournament, is set to return to scenic Grand Lake in the northeast corner of Oklahoma on Sunday, October 26, 2025. The second iteration of the tournament will be hosted in partnership with Tulsa Scheels, and anglers from across the country are invited to participate for a chance to win the $20,000 first-place payout and enjoy a weekend of fellowship, fun and bass fishing.
