What Does It Cost To Fish Tournaments At Each Level?

There are many different fishing tournament levels that an angler can choose to compete in, and a lot of them are dependent on the individual’s age. However, there are also several different types of fishing tournaments: team series, boater vs. boater, co-angler vs. co-angler, and now even kayak events. There will definitely not be a shortage of fishing tournaments any time soon. Knowing the costs is one of the most important factors that will influence an angler of making his or her decision of which tournament to compete in. The total costs for each tournament can vary depending on how much money is spent on gas, food, lodging, and fishing tackle. For the sake of keeping this blog as less overwhelming as possible, we are simply just addressing the three major national organizations: BassmasterMajor League Fishing, and The National Professional Fishing League. Check out the full blog here.

Best Of The 2024 Bassmaster Classic Expo

The highlight of the Bassmaster Classic this year for me was visiting Rick Clunn’s booth at the expo. Clunn offered some limited edition items to commemorate his “50 Years Of Fishing”, and spent time meeting fans from all across the globe. Clunn offered numerous collectibles and apparel, including 34 southwestern blanket style hats, specially minted coins, as well as his favorite Rico topwater baits. Clunn was honored throughout the Classic including appearing on the main stage at the weigh-in with Johnny Morris, Bob Cobb, and Bill Dance.

Weight Management

Utilizing larger glide baits like the SPRO KGB Chad Shad for forward facing sonar scenarios has become a popular technique recently for Elite Series pro Bryan New. In order to get these baits down to the fish you spot on your FFS quickly, you often times need to add some weight to the bait. “Adding some weight to a bait like the SPRO Chad Shad really helps it get down to fish I see on livescope a lot faster. I like to use an 1/8oz cylinder style drop shot weight attached to the front split ring, rather than wrapping the hook with lead wire or using lead tape. It doesn’t interfere with the bite of the treble hook or the action of the bait whatsoever. Give this modification a try on your favorite glide bait the next time you get a chance!” said New.
Round #3 of the Best On Tour custom painted bait collaboration with Greenfish Tackle is here! Get your hands on these two exclusive SPRO RkCrawler colors (BOT Blue and Red Wave) while supplies last. Check them out here.

On The Horizon

Developed and successfully utilized in Japan for the popular mid strolling technique, the Horizon Head Jigs are designed to maintain a horizontal posture while imparting an extremely natural action to your bait. The Horizon Head Series comes equipped with an ultra-sharp Gamakatsu round bend jig hook with Nano Alpha finish. The Horizon Head LG and Horizon Head LG Weedless have a Tournament Grade Wire (TGW) hook that is thinner, stronger, and sharper than the standard wire and features the Nano Alpha finish. The Nano Alpha finish is 2X slicker for improved hooking ratios and 4X more corrosion resistant than traditional finishes. This premium jighead series has three offerings: Horizon Head, Horizon Head LG and Horizon Head LG Weedless.

The Horizon Head was designed with the weight distributed on the shank of the hook which creates a horizontal profile when rigged with a soft plastic to simulate a realistic baitfish appearance when swimming or falling. It has a Gamakatsu round bend jig hook with Nano Alpha finish. It is available in three sizes ranging from 3/64-3/32 with hook sizes from 1/0-3/0.

The Horizon Head LG was designed for mid and deep strolling and features a TGW hook with Nano Alpha finish. Like the original Horizon Head, it also features weight distribution down the shank of the hook to create a horizontal profile when retrieved or falling. The LG version features a larger gap hook with a focus on the hook tip angle and a center of gravity to produce a rolling action on the retrieve. It is available in four sizes ranging from 1/8oz to 1/5oz and three hook sizes from 1/0-3/0.

The Horizon Head LG Weedless has an added weedguard for fishing around cover. It features the larger gap TGW Nano Alpha LG hook. This weedless version has a titanium weedguard molded in the head to help prevent snags, while not impacting hooking ratios. It is available in four sizes ranging from 1/8oz -1/5oz and three hook sizes from 1/0-3/0.

Lucas’s Dream Shop

We recently moved from the house we had been in for 12 years and our plan is to be in this house for a really long time, so I built this shop with that in mind. I used to have a 20’x40’ shop, but I spent the extra money to do a 20’x60’ for the new build so I could fit the whole rig in it. So far that has been money well spent. It has made me extremely efficient getting ready and packing for tournaments. I use to think that I wanted a pull through shop, but the one thing you don’t think about is that you’ll lose a whole wall for storage space. That’s why I stuck with the traditional garage. I will back in every time to have that entire wall for storage. I also added a drain, fans above my boat parking, and an epoxy floor in this shop. I’m stoked with how it all turned out! One trick if you have slat wall is using the slat wall clothes hangars for rod storage. This works great and gets your rods off the ground.

2025 Bassmaster Elite Series Roster Set

On the heels of a record-setting 2024 Bassmaster Elite Series, where attendance and viewership numbers were equaled only by record weights and nail-biting finishes, the competitive field for the 2025 season has been set. Although last year’s rookie class took the Elites by storm, the young guns stepping up to the big stage this year are just as fierce. However, the veterans will have something to say about who will be holding the blue trophies when the scales settle. All 104 anglers invited to join the 2025 Elite class accepted the challenge, including seven former Bassmaster Classic champions and eight former Angler of the Year champions. The rookie class is led by Easton Fothergill, who won two Bassmaster Opens events in 2024 and the points race in the 2024 Elite Qualifiers division to punch his ticket to the big show. Cody MeyerTucker SmithPaul MarksEmil WagnerAndrew LobergDakota EbareBeau Browning and Evan Kung are also part of the stacked freshman class. Two legends will be joining the 2025 Elites, both dragging a Classic trophy alongside them. Randy Howell won the world championship in 2014 and has almost $2 million in B.A.S.S. winnings. Cliff Pace hoisted the Ray Scott Bassmaster Classic trophy in 2013 and has almost $1.7 million in career earnings. Each event will kick off with the full field of 104 anglers on Days 1 and 2 before the field is cut to 50 for the semifinal round. The field will then be cut to the Top 10 on the final day, with the winner taking home the title and the $100,000 first-place prize. The 2025 Elite Series will kick off with the Bassmaster Elite at St. Johns River February 20-23. From there, the competitors will rattle rods through six other states while battling for the Progressive Insurance Bassmaster Angler of the Year title and a berth into the 2026 Bassmaster Classic. Check out the full roster here.

Designed in collaboration with YouTube influencer and tournament angler Ben Milliken, the versatile 6th Sense Ozzie 4.0 is an ideal bait for hover strolling tactics and is also incredibly productive as a spinnerbait or vibrating jig trailer. Crafted with a segmented body for a realistic swimming action, the 6th Sense Ozzie 4.0 is made with 3D body ridges and a horizontal forked tail that incorporates a small ball at the base for increased flutter and stability.

When rigged on a jighead, the Ozzie Soft Jerkbait tantalizingly rolls side-to-side and reacts to even the slightest movements of the rod tip, making it ideal for casting to individual targets while using forward-facing sonar. Available in a wide selection of colors to help coax even the most pressured fish, the 6th Sense Ozzie 4.0 is ready to rock some big bass. Check out the full selection here

B.A.S.S. Says No To Co

B.A.S.S. recently announced that the longstanding co-angler program within the Bassmaster Opens has been eliminated for the 2025 season. Get Rewarded For Running A Nitro

Once or twice during the off season I love to take the opportunity to jump into a local event. Last week I fished the Let’s Talk Fishin event on Lake Roosevelt. My pal Kent Howell and I finished third out of 61 boats. One huge benefit of running a Nitro boat is the re-vamped rewards program. In this particular tournament, we would have won an extra $5,000 for first place. We still managed an extra $500 for being the highest finishing Nitro owner. Check out more details on how you can win some extra money with Nitro Rewards here.

Green Mountain Goodness

Traveling as much as we do, eating out can become pretty expensive and unhealthy over an extended period of time. I travel with a Green Mountain Grills “Trek” portable pellet grill. Having the Trek allows us to have tasty and healthy meals every evening. I’ll often grill enough food to get through the full practice period before an event to avoid having to cook on the late practice nights. After tournament days I will grill something fresh every evening. It’s a great way to wind down and the food comes out great!

No Stress Culling

One of my favorite newer products for tournament fishing is the DD26 Cull I.D. I’ve been using these tags for about a year now and find that the fish stay much healthier in the livewell through the tournament day. Rather than obstructing the fish’s mouth, these tags clip to the rear dorsal fin. These tags help identify fish quickly while culling without adding stress to the fish. Each kit includes 8 individually colored and numbered tags for easy management, and every stainless-steel clip resists rust and corrosion, prolonging their lifespan as a set. Check them out here.
When it is all said and done I truly believe the Berkley Frittside will become a top 10 all time crankbait of all time. It catches fish year-round but really shines when the water temperatures start getting colder. This particular Frittside 5 has out produced any other crankbait I’ve tried out here in Arizona throughout late November and so far in December. As you can tell from the picture this bait has been chewed on quite a bit! Check out the full selection of Berkley Frittside crankbaits here

Livescope Presets Made Easy

I’ve been fortunate enough to run Garmin units on my boats for several years now, but am always learning new things that help me when I am out on the water. Traveling all over the country fishing different bodies of water means I am having to adjust the settings on my Garmin Livescope pretty regularly. When I find a setting I like for a particular condition I can quickly save it as a preset and even name it for easy access later on. Check out this quick video where I show you just how simple it is to do here.

Take Me Out To The Ballpark

Last month I was fortunate enough to spend a great day on the lake with my pal Corbin Burnes. Corbin is one of the top pitchers in Major League Baseball and a great fisherman. As a huge baseball fan, it’s been really cool to use my fishing platform to meet and fish with some special athletes like Corbin. Burns is currently a free agent after pitching last season with the Baltimore Orioles, and previously with the Milwaukee Brewers. I’m looking forward to seeing what the 2025 season has in store for him!

With the New Year just around the corner, anticipation is running high for the National Professional Anglers Association (NPAA) 2025 Annual Conference. The premier event for the sportfishing industry’s angling professionals including guides/captains, tournament anglers, tackle retailers, and industry representatives, the conference is slated for Friday, January 3rd through Saturday, January 4th, at the Chula Vista Resort and Conference Center in Wisconsin Dells, WI. Headlining the exciting schedule are featured speakers Justin Hamner, the 2024 Bassmaster Classic winner, and 2024 NWT Championship winner, Tom Huynh.. Their knowledge, tips, and tales of struggles to reach the top of their sport will truly inspire while helping you map out a route to your own professional success. Bigger Isn’t Always Better

According to Bassmaster Elite Series pro Bryan New, when it comes to fishing a jig, bigger isn’t always better. This mantra is particularly true during the colder months of the year. “When the water temperatures start to get below 60 degrees is when I really start to downsize my baits, and that includes a jig.” says New. His go-to setup for his smaller jig combination is a Greenfish Tackle Bad Little Dude Jig paired with a Nories Baits Escape Chiba Twin Creature Bait. Downsize your favorite jig and trailer combination over the next couple of months and see if will help you put more fish in the boat as well!
A pre-rigged jighead and minnow combination specifically built for use with live sonar, the Z-man Graph Shadz features a natural shad-shape body, highly detailed head shape, and forked tail that mimics the profile of the most common bass forage. Constructed from 10X Tough Elaztech material for maximum durability, an air cavity in the body increases the strength of forward-facing sonar returns, as the molded scale pattern traps air and releases air bubbles for increased sonar visibility.

Armed with a medium wire 3/0 black nickel sickle-shaped hook, the revolutionary line-through jig head rigging system and recessed bottom line tie provide the perfect line angle for precise horizontal balance, pendulum swings, and depth control. Finished with color-matched bodies, jig heads, and 3D eyes to tempt the most finicky fish, the Z-Man Graph Shadz enhances sonar returns with a balanced head design and naturally buoyant material that provides the perfect horizontal posture.

Financial Freedom

The 2025 Falcon Bass Boat 18 Freedom was born out of a need to bridge the gap in the market between higher-end boats and more affordable options. In today’s economy, the cost of bass boats has skyrocketed, and many anglers are left with few choices. The goal at Falcon Boats was to produce a well-built, affordable boat that doesn’t compromise on quality. This led to the creation of the 18 Freedom, a boat that combines the best of both worlds. While higher-end boats can retail for upwards of $90,000, the 18 Freedom comes in at a more accessible price point of $42,000. This makes it a great option for those who may have been priced out of the market for a larger, more expensive boat but still want a quality fishing experience.

According to the team behind Falcon Bass Boats, many customers had been “forgotten” as the industry shifted toward more expensive models. But with the 18 Freedom, they recognized the importance of catering to this segment, offering a boat that could be customized to meet specific needs without overloading the price tag. The Falcon Freedom 18 offers a “build-your-own” model, meaning that while the base model is priced affordably, you can always upgrade specific features down the road. For example, some owners have added more advanced electronics to the boat, giving it a personal touch.

Falcon remained focused on the boat’s performance and core features, which delivers on all fronts, and with the boat’s affordable base price, there’s room to add those extra features later on. With a focus on durability, practicality, and customization, this boat is a great option for anglers who want to fish without breaking the bank. The 18 Freedom fills a crucial gap between more expensive fiberglass boats and aluminum alternatives, which can sometimes feel like a compromise in quality. Boasting an impressive list of features, exceptional build quality, and attention to detail, it’s no wonder why this boat stands out in the crowd. Don’t settle for anything less than the best – the Falcon Bass Boat 18 Freedom is ready to take your fishing adventures to new depths.

Passion To Profession

Transitioning from a full-time medical sales job to pursuing professional fishing full-time was the only way I could truly seize the opportunity I was given when I made the Elite Series. With that decision came a pressure unlike anything I’d ever experienced. The natural tournament pressure we all feel—the kind fueled by pure passion for the sport—was now joined by the weight of needing to make a living. Suddenly, it wasn’t just about doing what I love; it was about doing what I love and making it financially sustainable. This was a very new experience for me, I found myself doing my best to not think about it at all on the water. I like to tell myself that money doesn’t matter, but the truth is, it does. That added weight brought a different intensity to the sport, but it also made moments like lifting a fish into the boat that much more rewarding

Weathering The Waves

Fishing 15 professional-level tournaments in a single year has taught me more about catching bass than I ever imagined. But the biggest lesson wasn’t just about strategy or technique—it was about the toll it takes on both my equipment and my body. Battling big waves, enduring harsh weather, and the repetitive motion of casting have pushed me physically. My shoulders have taken the brunt of it. Years of college soccer and consistent weightlifting left me with lingering issues that fishing has only amplified. To stay competitive, I’ve had to incorporate targeted shoulder exercises and physical therapy into my routine. In hindsight, I wish I had started these exercises much earlier—they could have saved me a lot of discomfort and helped me handle the physical grind more effectively. When it comes to equipment, the solution was much more straightforward. Switching to BeatDown mounts was hands down the best investment I’ve made. Their reliability has eliminated the worry of my graphs shifting or moving in rough conditions. Knowing my gear can handle anything the water throws at it gives me one less thing to stress about and allows me to focus fully on competing at the highest level.

No Big Shop, No Problem

Renting a small space has taught me the importance of staying organized, especially with all the fishing gear I have. Every rod, reel, and tackle box has to be stored efficiently, as staying prepared directly impacts both time and money. The more organized you are, the less money you spend—when I slip up, I often find myself ordering items on the road that I already own but couldn’t find. While it can be challenging, this experience is building the discipline I’ll need to manage a larger space effectively one day. It’s also making me truly appreciate the value of space and look forward to maximizing a bigger setup in the future.

I’ve never been one to dive into the world of Japanese baits or overcomplicate my approach. Instead, I’ve always kept things as simple as possible and focused on the most important factor: finding fish. That mindset is why straight-tailed worms like the Missile Baits Magic Worm, Xzone Deception Worm, and Roboworm have been staples in everyone’s arsenal for decades. These baits are versatile, easy to use, and consistently trigger big bites.

For me, the Missile Baits Magic Worm was the game-changer in my journey to the Elite Series, accounting for 90% of the fish I weighed in during the season. I keep it simple by pairing it with a Gamakatsu Aaron Martens G-Finesse Heavy Cover Hook and spooling up with 20 lb Sunline Sniper line, allowing me to use it as both a finesse and power setup. By sticking to simple, reliable tools and focusing on locating fish, I’ve been able to stay consistent and competitive. Sometimes, keeping it stupid simple is the smartest move you can make.

Power Matters

Getting my boat rigged every year is something that I look forward to but also despise. There is a lot of stress that I have in rigging a new boat. Mostly because I have been used to everything in my old boat and although it’s not much different, there are small tweaks I find in every new boat. One thing that stays consistent in my rigs is Power. I’ve learned with the technology we now have in fishing that POWER MATTERS A LOT. Having 16V power to all my electronics from Powerhouse Lithium has been a big deal for me. It provides cleaner, more consistent power, resulting in brighter screens and improved performance throughout the day. Addressing voltage drop—caused by smaller gauge wire or long distances—is essential to keeping your graphs running at their full potential until the very end. When you get your battery setup dialed in, everything works exactly how it should, and that peace of mind makes all the difference.

Topwater Rod Choices For Fall Fishing

There’s something magical about fall in the Ozarks — the crisp air, the subtle frost on the ground, and the anticipation of deer season kicking off. But for Jeremy Lawyer, nothing gets his heart racing more than the thought of the topwater bite. It’s a signal that a fresh push of bass is coming shallow, feeding heavily on shad, and ready to blow up on a bait. As the leaves change, and the water cools, it’s the perfect time to be on the water. There’s just something about the rush of casting a buzzbait or a plopper over the water and watching a bass explode on top. If you’re targeting these aggressive, shallow-water fish, the setup you use makes all the difference. Here’s a quick breakdown of his favorite rods for tackling topwater in the fall. Find out more details about which rods Bass Pro Tour angler Jeremy Lawyer chooses for fall topwater fishing here.

Elite Series No Longer Pay To Play

Bassmaster Elite Series, heading into its 20th season, will no longer require entry fees. Yes, you heard that correctly. In 2025, competitors of the most prestigious tournament trail on the planet, for the first time ever in the history of B.A.S.S. competition, will no longer fish for their own money. No longer are Elite Series pros required to pay to play. This historic decision was not made lightly. B.A.S.S. has long believed that the ultimate goal of the organization’s highest level of competition should be on par with other individual professional sports, like golf and tennis, which do not require pros to pay entry fees to compete. However, on the heels of record-breaking viewership of Bassmaster LIVE on FOX networks and Bassmaster.com, paired with strong long-term partnerships, this ultimate goal has been realized. Find out more details here.

With increased payouts, Bass Cat aims to inspire more participants to strive for victory and elevate the competitive standard in fishing.

Family First

Family is my #1 priority when I am home. I might be in the Missile office every day that I am not on the road but I drop everything for family activities. My step son, Noah, is 25. He and his fiance moved away to Charlotte for a while after college but they moved back to the area last year. That is awesome for our family. My 17 year old daughter, Myah, is a senior and plays volleyball. She is looking at colleges so that is a slippery time for parents. Our youngest daughter, Ivy, is 12 and is all into gymnastics. She is quite the athlete and it is amazing to watch. My wife and I have been married for 19 years so we are starting to plan on what we are going to do for our 20th wedding anniversary. Life goes fast so we are trying to enjoy every minute.

Fit To Fish

Now that I am 46 years old, I am very happy that I have been into fitness since I was a teenager. I feel like I stay healthy with a decent diet, good vitamins, consistent workouts, and proper maintenance. I have been using 1st Phorm vitamins and supplements for a number of years and they are top quality. I also do lots of forearm work in the off season so tendonitis is never an issue. In 24 years as a full time pro angler, I have never had an issue and I think proper maintenance is the key. Check out this easy workout to help prevent tendonitis here. In my regular workouts, I do a mix of strength, agility, and cardio work. Fishing is an endurance sport but I would rather just lift weights so the mix is what I do to stay in optimal fishing shape.

The Missile Baits Magic Worm on a drop shot is the bait that has done more heavy lifting for me in the last 2 years over any other bait. I am admittedly still working on my minnow game, but the Magic Worm, on FFS or not, puts more fish in the boat in more types of places than anything else in my arsenal. Check out the full lineup of Missile Baits Magic Worms here.

My recent trip to Japan for Sunline was awesome! I posted three behind the scenes videos from the trip on my YouTube channel highlighting the experience. For the last several years I have done boat rigging videos, that take you through the entire process. These will start to drop in December, as I begin rigging my Bass Cat boat in November. Check out my channel here.

SPRO Walking Haint

The SPRO Walking Haint 125 is an amazing topwater walking bait. You can throw it a mile, and it has 3 big #2 Gamakatsu treble hooks on it so the hook ups are great. You can work this bait slow and steady or super aggressive, and it won’t catch the line on the front hook. I turned Ed Loughran onto this bait and it helped him win the Lake Champlain Elite Series event. Check out the full lineup of colors here.
