Passion To Profession

Transitioning from a full-time medical sales job to pursuing professional fishing full-time was the only way I could truly seize the opportunity I was given when I made the Elite Series. With that decision came a pressure unlike anything I’d ever experienced. The natural tournament pressure we all feel—the kind fueled by pure passion for the sport—was now joined by the weight of needing to make a living. Suddenly, it wasn’t just about doing what I love; it was about doing what I love and making it financially sustainable. This was a very new experience for me, I found myself doing my best to not think about it at all on the water. I like to tell myself that money doesn’t matter, but the truth is, it does. That added weight brought a different intensity to the sport, but it also made moments like lifting a fish into the boat that much more rewarding

Weathering The Waves

Fishing 15 professional-level tournaments in a single year has taught me more about catching bass than I ever imagined. But the biggest lesson wasn’t just about strategy or technique—it was about the toll it takes on both my equipment and my body. Battling big waves, enduring harsh weather, and the repetitive motion of casting have pushed me physically. My shoulders have taken the brunt of it. Years of college soccer and consistent weightlifting left me with lingering issues that fishing has only amplified. To stay competitive, I’ve had to incorporate targeted shoulder exercises and physical therapy into my routine. In hindsight, I wish I had started these exercises much earlier—they could have saved me a lot of discomfort and helped me handle the physical grind more effectively. When it comes to equipment, the solution was much more straightforward. Switching to BeatDown mounts was hands down the best investment I’ve made. Their reliability has eliminated the worry of my graphs shifting or moving in rough conditions. Knowing my gear can handle anything the water throws at it gives me one less thing to stress about and allows me to focus fully on competing at the highest level.

No Big Shop, No Problem

Renting a small space has taught me the importance of staying organized, especially with all the fishing gear I have. Every rod, reel, and tackle box has to be stored efficiently, as staying prepared directly impacts both time and money. The more organized you are, the less money you spend—when I slip up, I often find myself ordering items on the road that I already own but couldn’t find. While it can be challenging, this experience is building the discipline I’ll need to manage a larger space effectively one day. It’s also making me truly appreciate the value of space and look forward to maximizing a bigger setup in the future.

I’ve never been one to dive into the world of Japanese baits or overcomplicate my approach. Instead, I’ve always kept things as simple as possible and focused on the most important factor: finding fish. That mindset is why straight-tailed worms like the Missile Baits Magic Worm, Xzone Deception Worm, and Roboworm have been staples in everyone’s arsenal for decades. These baits are versatile, easy to use, and consistently trigger big bites.

For me, the Missile Baits Magic Worm was the game-changer in my journey to the Elite Series, accounting for 90% of the fish I weighed in during the season. I keep it simple by pairing it with a Gamakatsu Aaron Martens G-Finesse Heavy Cover Hook and spooling up with 20 lb Sunline Sniper line, allowing me to use it as both a finesse and power setup. By sticking to simple, reliable tools and focusing on locating fish, I’ve been able to stay consistent and competitive. Sometimes, keeping it stupid simple is the smartest move you can make.

I weighed in over 30 pounds three days in a row on my way to earning a Century Belt on the Elite Series. Every single fish I caught was on one bait—and no, it wasn’t a Damiki Minot-style bait! Want to see what it was? Check out the video here.

Power Matters

Getting my boat rigged every year is something that I look forward to but also despise. There is a lot of stress that I have in rigging a new boat. Mostly because I have been used to everything in my old boat and although it’s not much different, there are small tweaks I find in every new boat. One thing that stays consistent in my rigs is Power. I’ve learned with the technology we now have in fishing that POWER MATTERS A LOT. Having 16V power to all my electronics from Powerhouse Lithium has been a big deal for me. It provides cleaner, more consistent power, resulting in brighter screens and improved performance throughout the day. Addressing voltage drop—caused by smaller gauge wire or long distances—is essential to keeping your graphs running at their full potential until the very end. When you get your battery setup dialed in, everything works exactly how it should, and that peace of mind makes all the difference.

Topwater Rod Choices For Fall Fishing

There’s something magical about fall in the Ozarks — the crisp air, the subtle frost on the ground, and the anticipation of deer season kicking off. But for Jeremy Lawyer, nothing gets his heart racing more than the thought of the topwater bite. It’s a signal that a fresh push of bass is coming shallow, feeding heavily on shad, and ready to blow up on a bait. As the leaves change, and the water cools, it’s the perfect time to be on the water. There’s just something about the rush of casting a buzzbait or a plopper over the water and watching a bass explode on top. If you’re targeting these aggressive, shallow-water fish, the setup you use makes all the difference. Here’s a quick breakdown of his favorite rods for tackling topwater in the fall. Find out more details about which rods Bass Pro Tour angler Jeremy Lawyer chooses for fall topwater fishing here.

Elite Series No Longer Pay To Play

Bassmaster Elite Series, heading into its 20th season, will no longer require entry fees. Yes, you heard that correctly. In 2025, competitors of the most prestigious tournament trail on the planet, for the first time ever in the history of B.A.S.S. competition, will no longer fish for their own money. No longer are Elite Series pros required to pay to play. This historic decision was not made lightly. B.A.S.S. has long believed that the ultimate goal of the organization’s highest level of competition should be on par with other individual professional sports, like golf and tennis, which do not require pros to pay entry fees to compete. However, on the heels of record-breaking viewership of Bassmaster LIVE on FOX networks and Bassmaster.com, paired with strong long-term partnerships, this ultimate goal has been realized. Find out more details here.

Family First

Family is my #1 priority when I am home. I might be in the Missile office every day that I am not on the road but I drop everything for family activities. My step son, Noah, is 25. He and his fiance moved away to Charlotte for a while after college but they moved back to the area last year. That is awesome for our family. My 17 year old daughter, Myah, is a senior and plays volleyball. She is looking at colleges so that is a slippery time for parents. Our youngest daughter, Ivy, is 12 and is all into gymnastics. She is quite the athlete and it is amazing to watch. My wife and I have been married for 19 years so we are starting to plan on what we are going to do for our 20th wedding anniversary. Life goes fast so we are trying to enjoy every minute.

Fit To Fish

Now that I am 46 years old, I am very happy that I have been into fitness since I was a teenager. I feel like I stay healthy with a decent diet, good vitamins, consistent workouts, and proper maintenance. I have been using 1st Phorm vitamins and supplements for a number of years and they are top quality. I also do lots of forearm work in the off season so tendonitis is never an issue. In 24 years as a full time pro angler, I have never had an issue and I think proper maintenance is the key. Check out this easy workout to help prevent tendonitis here. In my regular workouts, I do a mix of strength, agility, and cardio work. Fishing is an endurance sport but I would rather just lift weights so the mix is what I do to stay in optimal fishing shape.

The Missile Baits Magic Worm on a drop shot is the bait that has done more heavy lifting for me in the last 2 years over any other bait. I am admittedly still working on my minnow game, but the Magic Worm, on FFS or not, puts more fish in the boat in more types of places than anything else in my arsenal. Check out the full lineup of Missile Baits Magic Worms here.

SPRO Walking Haint

The SPRO Walking Haint 125 is an amazing topwater walking bait. You can throw it a mile, and it has 3 big #2 Gamakatsu treble hooks on it so the hook ups are great. You can work this bait slow and steady or super aggressive, and it won’t catch the line on the front hook. I turned Ed Loughran onto this bait and it helped him win the Lake Champlain Elite Series event. Check out the full lineup of colors here.

Neal’s Guide To Mid Strolling

There is no doubt that utilizing forward-facing sonar with Damiki rigs and hover rigs has been the hottest technique in bass fishing over the past year. No matter the season, it has become a top technique across the country. Whether it is the Bassmaster Elite Series or MLF Bass Pro Tour, professional tournaments have been dominated with this technique. Michael Neal has made a lot of money over the past few years utilizing this exact technique. Check out his thoughts on the increasingly popular technique here. .
Built with the award-winning Z-Man Chatterbait Elite EVO head design, the Z-Man Tungsten Chatterbait Elite EVO leverages a low-profile and high-density tungsten construction for a faster sink rate and unique sound profile. A deadly collaboration between Tackle Warehouse and Savage Gear, the Savage Gear Soft Shine Glide 7″ Glide Bait is built to draw wary predators from their hideouts with hyper-realistic swimming and gliding action. Featuring a line-thru treble, the modified feathered hook is built to efficiently tuck-in a molded belly slot to lock the treble hook in place, dislodging from its position as soon as a fish is hooked. Designed to be fished on medium to fast retrieves to ignite the tail action, after pausing on a steady retrieve the Soft Shine wanders to the side, appearing as an inquisitive or wounded baitfish. For a more erratic action, work the Savage Gear Soft Shine Glide 7″ Glide Bait with a chop/twitch cadence, twitching your rod as if you’re fishing a topwater to produce a walk-in-place action right below the surface. Ideal for fishing around docks or isolated laydowns, the Savage Gear Soft Shine Glide 7″ Glide Bait draws fish out of cover and produces heart-stopping strikes thanks to its ability to work side-to-side in a stationary position. Check out the full selection here.

End Of An Era

On October 14, 2024, iconic trolling motor manufacturer MotorGuide announced they will cease production. All trolling motor production going forward will come under the Lowrance® and Simrad® brands, which their parent company, Navico, says will allow them to “provide anglers with the most advanced and seamlessly connected fishing systems.” MotorGuide started operation in 1947 and has been building trolling motors ever since. Their motor gained popularity in the 1960s, thanks to its easy-to-use nature. They helped pioneer the use of wireless controls, freeing anglers to walk about the boat. The Tour Pro was the first true cable-steer trolling motor with GPS anchor capability, making it an angler favorite. They have had a significant presence in the bass scene, but Navico is looking to their other brands for trolling motor production going forward. Check out more details here.

Pangrac’s Rod Choices For Finesse Rigs

When it comes to finesse rigs, spinning rods are usually required to get the job done. However, many spinning rods on the market either don’t have enough backbone to land big fish or are too stiff or heavy. Bassmaster Opens pro and Bass Talk Live host Matt Pangrac has two different rods he reaches for when throwing finesse rigs, and it all depends on whether he is fishing open water or heavier cover when deciding which one to choose. See a short video on his favorite finesse fishing setup here. When fishing around vertical and horizontal structure such as dock posts, cross braces, or brush piles, he reaches for a 7-foot 4-inch medium heavy power Denali Lithium Pro spinning rod. He prefers this rod during heavy cover situations because it has enough backbone to pull the fish out of the heavy cover while still having enough sensitivity to feel the most subtle bites. The longer length also allows for longer casts when fishing deep heavy structure and better handling when dealing with bigger fish by the boat. The moderate fast action tip on this rod allows for the rod to load up well when setting the hook and prevents the angler from pulling the hook out of the fish’s mouth when they fight. When fishing more open water finesse situations like when he is using his forward-facing sonar, Pangrac reaches for a 7-foot medium power Denali Android drop shot spinning rod paired with a Denali Fission Pro 2000 spinning reel. This rod has a fast tip which allows for working the bait effectively, and the shorter length makes it easier for making short accurate pitches which is crucial when trying to hit the fish directly on the head when locating them with forward-facing sonar. Many rods on the market will be super strong in backbone, but they often sacrifice sensitivity and will often be too stiff. The Android Series rods have the perfect balance of sensitivity and backbone paired with the perfect amount of forgiveness in the rod tip allowing for small movements in the lure and for the rod to load up well before setting the hook. Small movements in the lure are crucial when finesse fishing or “dinking and dunking” as Pangrac likes to call it! Too stiff of a rod tip will often result in working the lure too fast giving it little action whatsoever, but with a soft tip, an angler can twitch finesse baits like drop shots, neko rigs, and jig head/minnow combinations effectively giving it the action that it needs to entice the fish to bite. Just as if twitching a lure on a semi-slack line allows for more action, it’s the same concept when twitching a lure with a softer rod tip.

Try these two finesse setups next time you’re out on the water

Born out of necessity for deceiving some of the most finicky bass in the world, the Duo Realis Bayruf Seek 85S FW Under Walker delivers a wobble-slide motion that anglers can adapt to fish behavior by varying speed and rod tip action. Ideal for shallow water and long casts, the lipless design of the Bayruf Seek 85S triggers the predatory instincts of fish by unexpectedly changing directions as you twitch and jerk it through the water column. Offering a killer shimmy action on the descent, the Duo Realis Bayruf Seek 85S FW Under Walker is a great tool for capitalizing on tricky bites in a variety of water depths. Check out the full selection here.

AFTCO Breakwater Gloves

Fall Fishing can bring some of the best fishing of the entire season, but with that great fishing comes the need to stay comfortable in cold and wet fall weather. No matter what your choice of species or tackle is, having warm hands is the key to a successful day. While big, bulky waterproof gloves can keep your hands warm, they often make it challenging to operate baitcast or spinning tackle. On the other hand, thin gloves offer dexterity but fail to keep your hands warm and dry. AFTCO has solved that challenge with the new Breakwater gloves, and they will make your fall fishing drier and warmer. The Breakwater waterproof fishing gloves are made with a 100% waterproof membrane to keep water out and comfort locked in. They are soft to the touch on the outside and very comfortable from a 4-way stretch fabric construction. This gives your hands the ability to move and easily operate spinning or baitcast reels. These gloves allow you to feather your baitcast reel to make any cast or finesse spin the lightest line on a spinning reel. The palms and insides of the fingers have a tacky finish that provides extraordinary grip on any surface in the wettest of conditions. While soft and flexible on the outside, the construction inside the Breakwater glove features a 100% waterproof membrane to ensure your hands stay dry, no matter how much it rains or storms. Effective use of electronics when fishing or boating has never been more important, and the Breakwater gloves optimize your efficiency with your electronics in bad weather with touch screen compatible fingertips on the thumbs and index fingers of each glove. No more having to take your gloves off to make an electronics adjustment or send a text on your phone. The Breakwater gloves have arrived just in time for fall and winter fishing and are available in three sizes: medium, large, and x-large. AFTCO angler Mark Zona tested these gloves last fall and winter and was impressed by the performance he found with the Breakwater gloves in cold and wet weather. “If my hands get cold in harsh conditions, I’m done. After testing the Breakwater gloves, being cold or wet is zero concern. Two words—warm and dry!!!”, said Mark Zona.

Hand Jug Lining With Lawyer

When he isn’t chasing bass around the country on the Bass Pro Tour, Jeremy Lawyer is likely on the water or in the woods somewhere in the Midwest. One of Jeremy’s favorite off season pasttimes is hand jug lining for catfish. Check out what he has to say about his setup. “I’ll admit when Gamakatsu sent me the New Kraken Outbarb Circle my first thought was…… “why would it matter which side the barbs on?” Well they’ve convinced me it does! After using them first hand jug lining the past few months really raised my eyebrows. In the palm of my hand the similarities were the same with every Gamakatsu hook….. black nickle coating, a great diameter, and super sharp! Then paying attention to our catch ratio I really took notice to how fewer lost fish we had! (You can always tell because they slime your main drop line up around your hook drop line.) Now with any jug line set up there’s definitely opportunity for lost fish with the issue of slack tension and multiple fish on the same line as well sometimes causing the slack to magnify tremendously at times. Right out of the gate I noticed that if we hooked up, 95% of the time we owned em! I noticed that removing the hook from a catfish took a different pressure point/rotation than a traditional hook and it was always towards the hook hole. So with the out barb design if there is a slack line issue it’s actually protected from the barb itself and with the smooth side always pulling into the fish from self inflicted pressure from the fish it makes perfect sense why out catch ratio went up! If you’ve struggled with lost fish with your traditional hook styles than take a look at the “Kraken”……. My opinion has always been, there’s nothing worse than doing anything in the outdoors and going through the effort to only be let down by your equipment!”

Is the Heddon Zara Spook the greatest topwater lure of all time? It doesn’t look like much. A boring, almost uninspired shape. No bells, no whistles, no rattles, props, clackers, or blades but put this particular lure in the water, tied to the end of a baitcaster in the hands of a skilled angler, and everything changes! RetroBassin recently did a deep dive on this iconic lure. Check out the full video here.
