| Every spring, many anglers notice a sudden change on their forward-facing sonar. One day the screen is clean and easy to read. The next day it looks like static is filling the display (especially in the upper part of the water column). Your lure becomes harder to track and fish are tougher to identify. Before assuming something is wrong with your electronics, understand this is usually normal.
Clutter can come from several things:
• Dirty or stained water
• Pollen in the water column
• Algae or other suspended debris
This time of year, pollen is usually the biggest culprit.
A common mistake anglers make is lowering gain or sensitivity to clean up the screen. That removes clutter, but also weakens returns from fish and your lure.
Instead, try:
• Slightly increasing gain or sensitivity to shoot through the pollen
• Switching to single-color palettes with black backgrounds like Green Emerald or Moss instead of blue backgrounds to filter the noise.
